Why layers suit Techiman

A layer is a long-term bird. You are not selling it in weeks. You are raising a flock that will lay for many months, so the line you choose and the timing of the hatch count for more than the price of one chick.

Techiman has a busy market, and an egg flock needs a buyer every week. Traders come to town to buy in quantity, and households buy by the tray. Think about who will buy your eggs before you pick a line, because that buyer decides how you pack, how often you sell and how big the flock should be.

Lines and price

We supply imported layer lines. Hy-Line Brown starts at GH₵23 a chick, or GH₵1,150 for a box of 50. Hy-Line White and Bovans Brown start at GH₵25.50 a chick, or GH₵1,275 for a box of 50. These are starting figures, so confirm today's price with the farm before you budget.

The main difference you will see on the yard is egg colour. Hy-Line Brown and Bovans Brown lay brown eggs. Hy-Line White lays white eggs. Ask your buyers which colour they prefer before you choose. A white-egg flock sold into a brown-egg market is a problem you can avoid at the start.

Feed in the maize belt

Techiman sits where forest meets savannah, and the maize belt runs through the area. Maize is the energy base of most layer rations, so you are close to the grain. That does not make feed cheap. Feed is the biggest running cost in a layer house, and you carry it for many months.

Ask your feed dealer for a price on a layer ration, not just a bag of maize. Compare it with the feed mill's price and check the bag weight. Keep a simple note of how much feed the flock uses each week. Egg count and feed use tell you more together than either does alone.

Two rainy seasons mean feed bags can sit in damp air for weeks if you let them. Stack them off the floor, cover them, and use the older bags first.

Delivery from Kasoa to Techiman

Our hatchery is at Opeikuma, near Kasoa. Techiman is about 380 km away by road, and the usual journey takes 7 to 9 hours. Chicks travel in ventilated boxes of 50, and one box is our minimum order. A layer order for Techiman starts at 50 chicks.

Before you pay, we confirm the price, the hatch date and the delivery cost to Techiman. Hatch dates matter a great deal for layers. A hatch takes 21 days in the incubator, so ask us to match the hatch date to the day you can receive the box.

Plan the receiving end before the box is due. Have the brooder warm and dry, drinkers filled and feed on hand. If any chicks arrive dead, tell us as soon as you see them. Dead-on-arrival chicks are replaced free in the next hatch.

Brooding and rearing for a laying flock

A layer flock needs a longer rearing period than a meat bird, and it needs a steady routine more than anything else. Chicks that are fed, watered and checked at the same times each day settle faster. Changes in feed, light or handling can set a flock back, so make changes slowly and write them down.

  • Brood in a warm, dry, draught-free house from the first night, and keep the litter dry in the rains.
  • Give water first, then feed, and keep both clean and within easy reach.
  • Check the flock twice a day. Look for chicks that stand apart, huddle or lag behind, and act on them the same day.
  • Keep the vaccination record. Every batch is vaccinated at hatch, and we tell you what was given. Ask your vet to plan follow-up doses against that record.

Damp weather brings litter problems and wet feed, and both hit a laying flock. Ventilate the house, keep the feed bags covered and off the floor, and clean the litter before it starts to smell.

Selling eggs from a Techiman flock

An egg flock earns when it lays steadily, so the first goal is a flock that lays on time and keeps laying. The second goal is a buyer who collects every week. Decide whether you will sell to households, to traders who buy in quantity, or to both. Each route has its own pace and its own packing needs.

Keep a daily count of eggs collected, a weekly note of feed used and a record of any birds lost. Those three numbers tell you whether the flock is paying. A flock that looks busy but lays poorly is costing you feed every day.

Techiman's market is busy with resellers, and a regular supply is worth more to a reseller than a large supply that comes once. If you want to sell on a steady basis, start talking to buyers before the first eggs come, not after. A buyer who knows your flock date will plan around it.

Timing the first eggs

Plan the lay date backwards from the market you want to sell into. A flock that starts laying in a slow stretch of the year has to find buyers for its first eggs, and a flock that starts in a busy stretch sells easily. Ask us for the hatch dates that fall in the weeks you want, and write the lay date down before you pay.

Keep the first eggs small and clean. Collect them often, store them out of the sun, and sell the first trays to buyers you already know. Early eggs teach you more about the flock than any chart does.

Expect the first weeks of lay to be uneven. Some days bring a small tray and some days bring a big one. Judge the flock over a month, not a day, and keep your buyers informed when the count changes.

Keeping the house clean and closed

A layer house is a long-term investment, so keep it clean. Limit visitors to the house, and wash footwear at the door. Do not mix birds from other yards into your flock. Keep the feed store closed and rodent-free. Clean drinkers every day, and clean the house between batches before the next chicks arrive.
