How to handle hatching eggs
- Let them rest. After travel, stand the eggs pointed end down for 12 to 24 hours before setting so the air cell settles.
- Store them cool, not cold. A cool room at about 13 to 18 °C is right. A fridge is too cold and a hot room starts the embryo growing too early.
- Set them within a week. Hatchability falls with every day of storage after about seven days.
- Do not wash them. Washing removes the natural coating that keeps germs out of the shell.
- Warm them slowly. Bring the eggs to room temperature before they go into a hot incubator, so they do not sweat.
Incubator settings
| Stage | Temperature | Humidity | Turning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Days 1 to 18 (setter) | 37.5 °C | 50 to 55% | At least three times a day, or hourly by machine |
| Days 19 to 21 (hatcher) | 37.2 °C | 65 to 70% | None. Keep the lid closed |
Candle the eggs at about day 7 and again at day 18. Remove clear eggs and any that have stopped developing. Our 21-day incubator slider shows what is happening inside the shell on each day.

Incubation periods
| Bird | Days to hatch |
|---|---|
| Chicken | 21 |
| Guinea fowl | 26 to 28 |
| Turkey | 28 |
| Quail | 17 to 18 |
What hatch rate should you expect?
Not every fertile egg hatches. A well-run small incubator commonly hatches about 70 to 85 percent of the fertile eggs set. Power cuts, wrong humidity and opening the lid during hatching are the usual reasons for a poor hatch.
Would you rather skip the incubator? Our large incubators do this every week. Order broiler or layer day-old chicks and they arrive hatched, vaccinated and ready for your brooder.
Questions farmers ask
How long can hatching eggs be stored before setting?
Set them within seven days for the best results. Hatchability falls with each further day of storage.
What temperature and humidity do chicken eggs need?
Hold 37.5 degrees Celsius and 50 to 55 percent humidity for the first 18 days, then about 37.2 degrees and 65 to 70 percent humidity for the last three days.
Should I wash hatching eggs?
No. Washing removes the protective coating on the shell and lets germs in. Set only clean eggs and leave them unwashed.
