What moves chick prices in Ghana
- Feed costs. Maize and soya prices set the cost of keeping parent flocks, and that cost passes into every chick.
- Import costs. Imported chicks and imported hatching eggs are paid for in foreign currency, so the exchange rate and air freight matter.
- The season. Demand for broiler chicks rises six to eight weeks before Christmas and Easter, when farmers stock for the festive market.
- Supply. When hatcheries are short of hatching eggs, chicks become scarce and prices rise quickly.
How to compare prices fairly
The cheapest chick is not always the cheapest bird. Before you compare, ask each seller the same questions.
- Which vaccines have the chicks already had?
- How many chicks are in a box, and are extras added for losses on the road?
- What does delivery to your town cost?
- Is the breed what it says on the box, and where were the chicks hatched?
Then run the numbers in the profit calculator. A chick that costs a little more but loses fewer birds usually earns more.
