Why Sasso suits Bono Region

Sasso is a dual-purpose bird. Keep it for meat and you get a bird that finishes later than a broiler. Keep it for eggs and you get a hen that lays steadily. That mix suits a household or a small farm that wants both eggs on the table and birds for meat at festive times, without buying every bag of feed from the market.

We hatch Sasso locally, and at GH₵13 each it sits at the lower end of our range. You pay less per chick than for the imported broilers and layers, and in return you accept slower growth. That trade-off is the whole reason to choose it. If you want the fastest bird to market, a broiler is the better tool. If you want a hardy bird for a more relaxed system, Sasso is the one to look at.

The long dry season is hard on any bird that has to forage for itself. A hardy line is the safer choice for a free-range plot in Sunyani, and it gives you more room to plan around the dry months.

Free range in a long dry season

Free range sounds simple. In a long dry season it gets harder. The grass dries out, insects thin, and birds that were scratching happily in the wet months start looking for shade and food at the same time. Plan for that before the dry months arrive, not in the middle of them.

Provide shade and a sheltered roost, and give the birds a supplement feed each day so they are not relying on what they find. Water matters more than usual, so put drinkers in the shade and check them twice a day. Keep the birds away from stagnant puddles and ditches, which can carry disease.

Predators are a constant risk on any free-range plot. Lock the birds in at night, check the enclosure, and walk the perimeter after dark. A flock lost to a predator in the dry season is hard to replace quickly, so this is one place where a little work pays back at once.

How the Sasso chicks reach Sunyani

Our hatchery is in Opeikuma, Kasoa, and Sunyani is about 380 km away by road. The usual journey is 7.5 to 9 hours. Chicks travel in ventilated boxes of 50, and every batch is vaccinated at hatch. We tell you what was given, so your vet knows where to pick up the schedule.

Before you pay, we confirm three things with you: the price, the hatch date and the cost of transport. Choose a hatch date that fits your brooder build, not the other way round. If the house is not ready, the chicks should not be coming yet.

Open the box as soon as it arrives and count. Tell the farm straight away about any dead chicks, since dead-on-arrival chicks are replaced free in the next hatch.

Brooding Sasso chicks in the first weeks

A Sasso chick needs the same start as any other day-old chick. Get the brooder warm and dry before the box opens. Lay clean litter, set the heat, and watch the birds. Even spreading means the heat is right. Crowding means cold, and birds at the edges with open beaks mean too hot.

Water first, then feed. Use a starter feed fine enough for small chicks to eat, and check that every bird can reach the drinker. Remove weak or stuck chicks promptly, since they can drag down the rest of the group if they are left alone.

Keep records from the first morning: deaths, feed given, water changes and any unusual behaviour. Sasso grows more slowly than a broiler, so the early weeks need patience. A chick that is slow in week one is not necessarily a problem. A chick that is slow and sitting apart from the others is.

Slower growth means the feed bill runs longer. Budget for feed across the whole rearing period, not only the first month. Ask your feed seller for today's price before you commit, because bag prices move with brand and season.

Feeding Sasso through each stage

Most growers split the feed into three phases: a starter for the first weeks, a grower ration while the bird builds frame and muscle, and a finisher or layer ration closer to sale or lay. Each phase should match the bird's needs, and the change between them should be gradual over a few days, not overnight.

Because Sasso grows more slowly, the grower phase lasts longer than it would for a broiler, and that is where the feed bill grows. Buy in quantities you can store dry, and check each bag for mould or insects before you open it. In a damp month, a bag that has sat in a corner for two weeks can go off faster than you think.

Ask your feed dealer which ration suits your bird and your plan, and get the price in writing. Bono Region is maize country, so maize-based rations are common, but the right protein is what carries the flock. Do not cut protein to save money on a bird you plan to sell for meat.

Selling Sasso meat and eggs around Sunyani

A Sasso flock gives you two products, and that is its strength. Eggs sell through the week and meat sells in bursts. Households buy eggs in small amounts, while cooks and small traders buy birds for particular events. Keep both lines in view when you plan the hatch.

Festive demand is real in Sunyani. Christmas, Easter and Eid bring buyers who want a bird ready on a certain day. Count back from those dates. A cockerel that is not at a sellable weight on the day a buyer wants it is no use to anyone, so plan the hatch around the calendar.

Price the birds by weight, and price the eggs by the tray if your buyers prefer that. Ask buyers what they pay now, rather than copying a figure from another town. Local prices move quickly, and what you were paid last season may not hold.

Keeping the flock healthy at home

Every batch from our hatchery is vaccinated at hatch, and we tell you what was given. That is the start of a health plan, not the end of it. Keep your vaccination record with the slip from the box, and ask your vet for the next steps on the schedule your flock needs.

Biosecurity is cheap and it works. Keep visitors away from the house, clean your footwear at the door, and do not share equipment between houses without washing it. Keep wild birds and other animals out of the feed store and away from the drinkers.

Separate any bird that looks unwell, and call a vet early rather than waiting to see whether the rest of the flock shows the same signs. Isolating a sick bird early keeps one loss from becoming a flock loss.
