Layers are a longer commitment than broilers. A layer chick grows for months before she lays her first egg, so a keeper in Accra plans the egg business from the first day, not from the first egg. We hatch Hy-Line Brown, Hy-Line White and Bovans Brown at our farm in Opeikuma, Kasoa, about 30 km by road from Accra.

Every chick is vaccinated at hatch, and you buy them in boxes of 50. That box is the minimum order and a sensible starting flock for a yard or a small house. Collect them from the farm, or have them delivered to you across Accra on a short run.

This page is for keepers in the Greater Accra Region who want the egg side sorted out before the chicks arrive: why layers suit the city, how the chicks reach you, how to rear them, where the eggs sell, and how to order.

Why layers suit an Accra market

Eggs sell in Accra every day. Households buy them by the tray, bakeries and cake makers buy them steadily, and cooked-food sellers and chop bars use them for breakfast orders. A flock that lays through the week gives you income that comes in regularly, which suits a city where household expenses also come in regularly.

Brown and white egg layers sell differently, so ask your nearest buyers before you choose. Hy-Line Brown and Bovans Brown lay brown eggs. Hy-Line White lays white eggs and is often lighter in body, which usually means it eats a little less feed. Some buyers ask for one colour only, and it is far easier to match the bird to the buyer before the chicks are hatched than after.

The climate matters for layers too. Our region is dry coastal savannah with two rainy seasons. Heat is hard on laying hens and can cut egg numbers in the hottest weeks. Plan the laying house with good airflow and shade, and keep the feed and water fresh whatever the weather.

How the layer chicks reach Accra

Our hatchery is in Opeikuma, Kasoa, about 30 km by road from Accra. The usual journey takes one to two hours, and traffic decides where in that range your trip falls. Agree the timing when you order, so the box does not arrive in the middle of a busy afternoon with nobody ready to receive it.

You can collect from the farm or ask for a short delivery to Accra. Either way, we confirm the delivery cost, the hatch date and the price before you pay. Layers travel in ventilated boxes, like broilers, and they should not sit in a hot vehicle or a sunny spot any longer than the journey needs.

Before the box is due, prepare the brooder and the growing space. A layer chick that arrives to a half-finished house spends its first days under stress, and early stress is hard to undo. Be ready on the day, and you give the birds the best start the farm can help you make.

Make a simple plan for the first month: who feeds, who checks the water and who writes the notes. Chicks do best when the same person is around each day, and a shared plan keeps the routine steady when someone is away.

What to check when the box opens

Open the box as soon as it reaches the house, in a shaded spot, and check it while the person who delivered it is still there. Count the chicks against your order. Look for alert birds that are standing and moving about, with clear eyes and no pasting around the vent.

Note any dead chicks on the spot and tell us the same day. Keep the lid off only as long as you need to move the chicks. A box that stays open in the sun or in a draught dries the birds out and chills them, and a fresh chick has no reserves for that.

Rearing layers from chick to laying house

Layers need more time and more planning than broilers. Brood them as you would any chick in the first weeks: a warm, dry, draught-free pen with clean water and starter feed. After that, the birds need room to grow, a steady feed programme and a plan for the move to the laying house.

Ask us for the rearing plan with your order. The farm can tell you the feed stages to expect and the vaccination dates to keep, so you are not guessing from a shop shelf. Keep weights and notes in a book, because a flock that falls behind in the rearing period usually shows it later in the lay.

In a peri-urban yard, space is often the limit. Plan the house so the birds have room to move. Crowded layers feed badly, fight more and lay less, and it is cheaper to plan the space at the start than to fix it later.

Light matters too. Layers respond to the day length they see, so keep the lighting in the house steady rather than switching it on and off. Ask us for the light programme that goes with the rearing plan, because changing it at the wrong time can throw the lay off.

Where the eggs sell in Accra

Start the sales plan before the hatch. Walk to the shops, bakeries and chop bars near you and ask who buys eggs and how often. Households buy in trays, so think about how you will pack and count, and whether a regular customer will take a set number each week.

Festive seasons are a strong time for eggs. Christmas baking, Easter, Eid al-Adha and Homowo all bring extra orders from families and cooks, and bakers buy steadily when they are busy with cakes. Plan the lay so your peak weeks land just before those seasons.

Keep the eggs clean and cool, and sell them fresh. An egg that waits in a hot store for days loses quality quickly. Collect them often and move them to a shaded place as soon as you can.
