A cockerel is a male chick, raised for meat. On our list, cockerels are sold as day-old chicks at a low per-chick price, which makes them a practical choice for a family that wants a batch of birds for the table or a small chop bar.
This page covers what cockerels are for, how they differ from broilers, the road from Kasoa to Koforidua, brooding on arrival, the buyers you will find around the town, and how to order. Cockerel pricing is set per chick and changes, so confirm today's figure with the farm.
What cockerels are for
Cockerels are male chicks, so they are not kept for eggs. Households and small food sellers buy them to raise for meat, and some keepers fatten a batch for the festive table. Expect them to take longer than an imported broiler to reach a size worth selling, so set your sale date before you buy.
Plan the yard with that in mind. A cockerel batch needs space to move, clean feed and water every day, and a shelter that keeps the rain and the cold off. Keep the batch together and check it daily so you notice a problem early.
Cockerels or broilers for a Koforidua plan
A broiler is the faster route to market. Imported Ross 308 and Cobb 500 chicks are from GH₵20 each, and they are bred for weight gain in a short time. If the main concern is the cost of the first box, cockerels are the lower-cost way in, because they are sold at a low per-chick price.
If you want a stated figure for a local dual-purpose hatch, the Plymouth or Barred Rock is from GH₵7 each, or GH₵350 for a box of 50. It is one of the lowest per-chick prices on our current list. Ask us which line fits your yard before you order.
The road from Kasoa to Koforidua
Our hatchery is at Opeikuma, near Kasoa. Koforidua is about 85 km away by road, and the usual journey takes two to three hours. Cockerel chicks travel in ventilated boxes of 50, sorted and counted before they leave.
Before you pay, we confirm the price, the hatch date and the delivery cost to Koforidua. Agree the hatch date early, so the birds arrive when your brooder is set up, and check that someone at the house can receive the box on that day.
What to have ready before the chicks arrive
Cockerels are raised like any other day-old chick, so the preparation is the same. Go through this list the week before the hatch date.
- A brooder with clean, dry litter, sized for the number of boxes you ordered.
- A heat source you have tested, with a plan for the night the power goes off.
- Feeders and drinkers washed and in place.
- Starter feed bought and stored dry.
- One person at the house who will receive the box and count the chicks with the driver.
Batch size matters more for cockerels than people expect. A brooder that is too full in the first days is where crowding starts, so set up enough space for the number you ordered and no more.
Brooding cockerel chicks after they arrive
Brood cockerel chicks the way you would any day-old chick. Have the brooder clean, dry and warm before the box comes. Put feed and water within reach straight away, and walk through the brooder every hour on the first day to see who is eating and who is crowding into a corner.
Count the chicks in front of the driver. Any dead on arrival are replaced free in the next hatch, as long as you tell us the same day and keep the box.
In the rains, watch for damp litter and draughts through the walls. In the harmattan, the air is dry and dusty, so keep the drinkers covered when the wind is up and keep the brooder warm at night.
Who buys cockerels around Koforidua
Most cockerel buyers want birds for the table. Family compounds, chop bars and small caterers all buy for meat, and funerals and outdoorings bring bigger orders at short notice. Festive seasons such as Christmas, Easter and Eid push demand up further.
Find your buyers before the chicks arrive. Two or three names in your notebook, with a rough idea of how many birds each one needs, will do more for your planning than any general market figure.
Agree the weight and the sale date with your buyers early. A batch that has a buyer waiting is easier to manage than one you have to sell in a hurry, and it is easier to plan the feed around.
A chop bar or caterer will often ask for a steady supply, and one batch may not be enough for them. Ask before you commit, and do not promise more than one batch can give.
Budgeting a cockerel batch
The per-chick price for cockerels is low, which is the reason many buyers start with them. The cost you need to plan for is what comes after the chick: feed for every week until the birds are sold, space to keep them, and the time you spend watching the batch.
Work backwards from your sale date. Count the weeks from hatch to sale, then the feed you will need for those weeks. Add the cost of the space and the time, and you have the real cost of the batch. Confirm today's chick price with the farm so the first line of that sum is current.
Cockerel price and how to order
Cockerels are sold at a low per-chick price. Because that figure changes with supply and the season, confirm today's cockerel price with the farm before you plan your budget. For a stated figure, the local Plymouth or Barred Rock is from GH₵7 each, or GH₵350 for a box of 50.
