Why broilers suit the Tema market

Tema is an industrial city built around its harbour, and that shapes who buys meat here. Many of the buyers we think about are not backyard keepers. They are caterers feeding work crews and events, food sellers who need the same size of bird week after week, and families who want chicken for a particular occasion. A broiler suits that kind of buyer because it is one fast cycle. You bring the chicks in, feed them out and sell on a date you can plan around.

We hatch two imported broiler lines, the Ross 308 and the Cobb 500. Both are bred for fast growth and a uniform bird at sale, which is what a caterer or food seller usually asks for. The line in the hatch can change from week to week, so ask us which one is coming when you order.

A broiler is also the least forgiving bird on our list. Growth depends on feed, water, warmth and clean housing, and a mistake in the first weeks is hard to undo. If you have not kept broilers before, sort out your housing and your feed stock before you pay, not after the chicks have reached your gate.

How delivery from Kasoa to Tema works

Our hatchery is at Opeikuma, near Kasoa. Tema is about 50 km from us by road, and the usual journey takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The road runs through Accra, so the time you actually get depends on when the van leaves and how the traffic is moving that day. Plan for the longer end of that range, especially on weekday mornings when the roads are busy.

Chicks do best when the box moves without a long wait. We do not load a box until the hatch date, price and transport cost have been agreed with you, and the sooner a closed box is on the road after that, the better. Tema sits on a dry coastal plain with a sea breeze, which helps. A box left in the sun at a roadside stop is still a real risk, though. Ask the person carrying it to keep it out of direct sun and not to stack it under heavy loads.

When the box reaches you, do not open it on the roadside or in the sun. Carry it into the shade, to the brooder, and open it there.

Brooding broilers on arrival

Have the brooder ready before the box reaches you. It should be clean, dry and warm, with no draught reaching the chicks. Put feed and water out before you open the box, so the chicks find them straight away. For the first day, spread the feed on clean paper or a tray so the chicks can see it and eat without searching for it.

When you open the box, lift the chicks out gently and count them. Chicks that are dead on arrival are replaced free in the next hatch, but that only works if you count when the box opens and tell us the same day. A count you make a week later is hard to match to the batch.

Watch the birds during the first hours rather than fiddling with them. Chicks that crowd into one corner or huddle under the heat are telling you something about temperature or draught. Change the heat source or the airflow first, and leave the feed alone until you know the warmth is right. Many early problems start with a brooder that was not ready when the box arrived.

The chicks were vaccinated at hatch. We tell you what was given, so your vet or whoever advises you can plan the next steps with the right information in hand.

Selling broilers in Tema

Most buyers here fall into three groups. Caterers and event cooks want birds of the same size each time, and they often book ahead. Food vendors and chop bars buy in steady quantities, usually every week. Families buy for an occasion and tend to buy close to the day. Each group needs a different sale plan. Decide which one you are selling to before the chicks arrive, because that choice sets your sale date, and the sale date sets your hatch date.

Festive demand is the big one. Christmas and Sallah usually push buyer numbers up for a few weeks, and birds that are ready in those weeks sell faster. When you talk to us about a hatch date, work backwards from those dates. We confirm the hatch date before you pay, so you can plan the sale around a fixed date rather than a guess.

Keep a simple record for every batch: what the chicks cost, what you spent on feed and medicine, how many birds you sold, and the price you got. A broiler run is only as good as its margin, and a notebook is enough to see it clearly. Do not trust your memory for the numbers at the end of the cycle.

Common mistakes new broiler buyers make in Tema

The first mistake is buying chicks before the sale is booked. A box of 50 is the minimum, and fifty birds need fifty places to go on the day they are ready. Talk to two or three buyers, get their names and quantities in writing if you can, and only then choose the hatch.

The second is underestimating feed. Broilers eat steadily as they grow, and running short of feed in the middle of a cycle is one of the most expensive mistakes a grower can make. Work out your feed stock for the whole cycle before the chicks arrive, and buy it from a shop you trust.

A third mistake is closing up the house too tightly. Tema's sea breeze helps the air move, but a closed room in the afternoon heat holds warmth and smell. Keep the ventilation working, and remove wet litter as soon as you see it.

The last one is waiting for the perfect week to start. There is no perfect week. There is the week the hatch is confirmed, and the week your buyers can take the birds. Plan for those two dates and start from there.
