Chicken sells in Accra every day of the week. It goes into family pots, onto the grills at the roadside, into chop bars and small restaurants that open early and close late. If you are thinking about raising broilers for that market, the first decision is the day-old chick, and that is the part we supply.

We hatch broiler day-old chicks at our farm in Opeikuma, Kasoa. The lines we supply are Ross 308 and Cobb 500, imported birds bred for fast growth. Every chick is vaccinated at hatch. You buy them in boxes of 50, which is our minimum order, and either collect them from the farm or have them delivered to you in Accra.

This page covers what happens between our hatchery and your pen: why broilers suit the city, how the chicks reach you, how to brood them on arrival, where the birds sell, and how to order. Keepers across the Greater Accra Region ask us the same questions, so the answers are below.

Why broilers suit an Accra market

A broiler goes from chick to market in weeks, not months. That short cycle is the main reason city keepers choose it. Money comes back while the next box is still being planned, and a small house can produce a steady supply of meat without waiting a year for a flock to mature.

Accra buyers are particular about the bird. They want a full breast, clean skin and meat that cooks tender. Ross 308 and Cobb 500 are chosen for that kind of finish, and they respond well to good feed and clean water from the first day. A chick that grows slowly costs you more in feed than it saves at the counter.

The climate asks something of the house as well. Our region is dry coastal savannah with two rainy seasons. The heat builds in the dry spells, and damp can creep into the litter during the rains. Airflow and dry, turned litter matter more here than the price of the chick. Heat is the thing to plan for in the hot weeks, and it is far easier to design for it than to fix a pen full of panting birds.

How the chicks get from Kasoa to Accra

Our hatchery is in Opeikuma, Kasoa, about 30 km by road from Accra. The usual journey takes one to two hours. Traffic decides where in that range your trip falls, so agree the timing with us when you order rather than on the morning the box is due.

You have two choices. You can collect the box from the farm, which gives you full control over the timing and the cost. Or we can deliver to you in Accra on a short run from the farm. Either way, we confirm the delivery cost with you before you pay, together with the price and the hatch date.

Chicks travel in ventilated boxes. Keep the box closed until you reach the house, and do not leave it sitting in the sun while you finish other errands. A chick that spends a long time in a hot vehicle arrives tired, so have the brooder warm and ready before the box is due, not after it arrives.

What to check when the box opens

Open the box as soon as it reaches the house, in a shaded spot, and check it while the person who delivered it is still there. Count the chicks against your order. Look for alert birds that are standing and moving about, with clear eyes and no pasting around the vent.

Note any dead chicks on the spot and tell us the same day. Keep the lid off only as long as you need to move the chicks. A box that stays open in the sun or in a draught dries the birds out and chills them, and a fresh chick has no reserves for that.

Brooding the chicks when they arrive

Set the brooder up the day before. Clean the floor, lay fresh dry litter, fill the drinkers with clean water and set the feeders where the chicks can reach them easily. Switch the heat source on an hour before the box comes. That way you know it works, and you are not fiddling with wires while the chicks are in your hands.

Many Accra keepers brood in a spare room of a compound house or in a corner of a yard, and that works well if the spot is right. Choose a place that is dry, out of the wind, away from the cooking fire and clear of the road. Keep the pen warm and free of draughts through the first week. Ask us for the temperature plan for the opening days, since the right heat depends on your house and on what you use to warm it.

When the box opens, let the chicks walk out on their own. Put them near the water first, then the feed. A chick that drinks early settles faster. Check the flock often in the first few days and watch how they spread out. A group that huddles on one side is telling you the heat is wrong, and it is quicker to fix that than to wait and see.

Every chick is vaccinated at hatch, so the first protection is already in the bird when it reaches you. Ask us for the next vaccination dates so your schedule matches the farm's, and keep a simple notebook of what you give and when. A notebook makes it much easier to see when something changes.

Where broilers sell in Accra

The best buyers for broilers in Accra are the people who already buy chicken every day. Cooked-food sellers and chop bars need a dependable bird each morning. Grill stands along the busy roads buy in volume and want birds that are a similar size each time. Small restaurants and caterers want a bird they can count on for an event, and home cooks buy whole birds for family meals.

Festive seasons push demand up hard. Christmas, Easter, Eid al-Adha and the Homowo celebrations all bring orders in a rush, and the rush is often shorter than the wait to fill it. Count backwards from each date and plan the hatch so the birds reach market when orders peak, not a week after.

Before you fix a number, talk to your buyers. Ask how many birds they take in a week, what weight they prefer and whether they want live birds or dressed ones. Then order the box size that matches the plan. Our minimum is one box of 50, so start there, learn the market over one cycle, and grow the flock once you know what sells fastest.

Price and how to order broiler chicks

Imported broiler chicks, Ross 308 and Cobb 500, start from GH₵20 each, or from GH₵1,000 for a box of 50. Treat those as starting figures and confirm today's price with the farm before you set your budget. Prices move with the hatch and with the season, so a figure you read on a page can be out of date by the time you call.
